Our Founding Fathers, repeatedly affirmed that an oath of office was a religious act. They explicitly rejected any notion that an oath was secular. James Madison stated: “An oath – the strongest of religious [Christian] ties…” Founding Father President John Adams declared: “Oaths in this country are as yet universally considered as sacred obligations.” Thomas Jefferson was responsible for writing Virginia’s laws, he required every elected official to put his hand on the Bible while taking an oath of office. Jefferson stated, “Every person…[shall] take the following oath of office, to wit, ‘You shall swear…’ So help me God.”
The majority of our state constitutions required a belief in God to hold office, Tennessee Constitution 1796- Article VIII, Section II. “No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments, shall hold any office in the civil department of this State.” In the Supreme Court case of Commonwealth v. Wolf (1817) the Court explained, “Laws cannot be administered in any civilized government unless the people are taught to revere the sanctity of an oath.” Daniel Webster was considered the great “Defender of the Constitution” he stated, “Our system of oaths in all our courts, by which we hold liberty and property and all our rights, are founded on or rest on Christianity and a religious belief.”
The oath taking process appears in four separate places of U.S. Constitution. The scriptural origin of this process to speak the truth and swear by His name “so help me God” can be found in the Bible. For example, God declared “I also raised My hand in an oath…” (Ezekiel 20:15, 23) and that “The LORD has sworn by His right hand” (Isaiah 62:8) and God’s people were told: “You shall swear by His name” (Deuteronomy 10:20).
For many years Democrats have fought to remove the Christian religion from the public square. The party’s hatred for God exploded at the 2012 DNC convention when delegates voted to remove God from their party platform. Recently, the secularist Democrats continued their attack on America’s Godly heritage. Congress has now removed “so help me God” from the U.S. House of Representatives oath taking process. Witnesses appearing before congressional committees will no longer have to testify truthfully before God, but the new god, Congress.
Many of our representatives on the left and the right have become culturally and politically silent with the things of God. In America our national motto is “In God We Trust.” If our elected officials won’t acknowledge God and put their trust in Him, then its time for them to be removed in 2020, not God!
You either put your trust in God or you become a god unto yourself.
In the year of our Lord 2019 –
Sincerely, Tom Hughes
