Letter to State Senators/Representatives

Dear Senator/Representative,

I am deeply concerned about a dangerous trend that is taking place in our state and nation. For example, Collier County school board members took an oath to “support the Constitution of the United States” but yet some of these members are promoting our form of government as a democracy. In fact, the United States is a constitutional republic not a democracy. The difference is, in a democracy the people themselves are the higher source of authority. When an issue is to be decided the general population votes and the majority wins. In a democracy the source of law is the majority or popular feeling of the people. Founding Father Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, said, “A simple democracy is the devil’s own government.”

In the United States of America’s constitutional republic we recognize an authority higher than the people, almighty God, as the source of our laws. Citizens then elect representatives who uphold and defend the written U.S. Constitution and adhere to the higher authority when they pass laws to govern our nation. Founding Father Noah Webster, who was the “Schoolmaster of America,” stated clearly what that source of law was – “Our citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament, or the Christian religion.” In fact, Article IV Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution guarantees our republican form of government –“The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government.”

To further exacerbate their unconstitutional support for democracy, the majority of the school board members have approved the text book titled United States Government, Our Democracy by McGraw Hill as part of Collier County school’s curriculum. These individuals are unqualified to hold the position of a Collier County school board member. In no way should they have been involved in the text book selection for the children of Collier County. In some cases, the textbooks selected by board members for the Collier County school system are unconstitutional and damaging to the integrity of our nation. I have presented you with a copy of my book, The Bible is the Higher Law in America, so that you could reference chapter 4 on United State’s constitutional republic form of government after reading my letter.

President John Adams explains, “[D]emocracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy; such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure.”   Adam’s prophetic statement about anarchy is unfolding in the United States of America as you read this letter.

May God bless all of you,
Tom Hughes, President
