Dear School Board member,

August is here already bringing in the start of another school year. In anticipation of students returning to school, teachers and school administrators are preparing for their arrival. Additionally, since the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida earlier this year, school board members have been faced with the daunting task of implementing additional school safety procedures. Some school districts want to increase security measures by fortifying schools with metal detectors, police officers and teachers with guns. Many parents, students, citizens, and legislators are crying out for stricter gun laws, focusing the blame on the NRA and the 2nd Amendment. I agree, some action needs to be considered to safeguard our schools, but keep in mind these extra security measures will only create a dangerous and scary environment for our children. As a concerned citizen, it’s disappointing that very few, if any, school districts are addressing the war on our schools as a spiritual battle – one that must be fought with prayer.

I am writing this letter to inform you I have created an organization called “Pray for our Schools.” Every Tuesday and Thursday around the start of morning classes I will be leading prayer at a different school location – outside school property on the right of way. This will give the opportunity for parents, students, teachers, and the general public to gather on the public sidewalks in front of our schools at 8:00 am to pray for God’s protection over our students and teachers.

I will be announcing the school locations via the Facebook page “Pray for our Schools” – or by email subscription through [email protected] – a week prior to the prayer gathering.  I am also encouraging everyone across the country who believe in the power of prayer to take one minute between 8:00-8:15 am EST everyday to pray for God’s protection over our students and teachers.

Throughout America’s history, acknowledging God through prayer and asking for His divine intervention has always been an effective weapon against evil. George Washington the “Father of our Country” said, “It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

I will keep the school board in my prayers knowing the safety and well-being of our precious children and preparing the next generation to receive the baton is a responsibility the school board takes very seriously.

Sincerely –

Tom Hughes, President
