America has many holidays and traditions we like to celebrate. Two of my favorite holidays are Christmas and New Year’s Day. Christmas is a time we celebrate the birth of our Savior. New Year’s Day is also a time we should celebrate the birth of our Lord, since it was approximately 2025 years ago Jesus was born.
Most everyone knows B.C. stands for “Before Christ,” and also believe A.D. means “After Death.” It’s true, Jesus died a horrible death on the cross, but 3 days later He arose from the dead! “The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day” (Luke 24:36). Jesus voluntarily died a torturous death to redeem mankind from sin and reconcile them with God. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Actually, the A.D. stands for Anno Domini. Anno is Latin for “in the year,” Domini is Latin for “lord,” or “in the year of our Lord.” Since Christianity believes Jesus is alive today, Christians therefore recognize 2025 as the current age we live in, acknowledge the birth of Jesus, and that He lives today!
When the delegates of the Constitutional Convention had finished framing the Constitution they placed a religious punctuation in the Attestation Clause to note they completed their work “the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven.” As they signed Article VII, our founders were recognizing they were living 1,787 years since the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus and the fact He still lives today was so significant to them. In 1870, a Congressional Act was passed making Christmas and New Year’s Day a national holiday recognizing, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). Isn’t it a shame that these facts are no longer acknowledged today?
“In all your ways acknowledge Him…” Proverbs 3:6
