Our Founding Fathers were very clear that the source of our constitutional republic was the Bible. John Adams stated, “The Bible…is the most republican book in the world.” Noah Webster stated, “Our citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible.” Of the Bible, Andrew Jackson stated: “That book, Sir, is the Rock upon which our republic rests.”

Our founders formed an elective representative constitutional republic according to the directives of Exodus 18:21 –“You shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands (federal), rulers of hundreds (state), rulers of fifties(county), and rulers of tens (local leaders).” We are to elect honest God-fearing individuals at the local, county, state, and federal levels. Pastors once taught that character qualifications for our leaders come from God.

Reverend Matthias Burnet’s 1803 sermon explains:

“[L]ook well to the character qualifications of those you elect and raise to office and places of trust….[L]et the wise counsel of Jethro…be your guide. Choose ye out from among youable men, such as fear God, men of truth and hating covetousness[Exodus 18:21] and set them to rule over you.”

Founding Father Noah Webster (called “The schoolmaster of America”) instructed students:

“When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God [Exodus 18:21]….If citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted…”

Our U.S. Constitution is not a godless document because it incorporates Article IV, Section IV into the Constitution. It states, “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form Of Government.”

President James Garfield a Gospel minister warned: “Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. . . . [I]f the next centennial does not find us a great nation . . . it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”

If you would like to hear more about the stewardship government that God has entrusted us with and take action steps needed to restore God to His rightful place in our nation, please contact me at to schedule a time for me to speak at your church or small group.

  2. Janet says:

God commands us to choose God fearing leaders ,God does not make suggestions.
Many when hearing this will often times reply ” We’re voting for a President not a Pastor.”
I’ve got to ask ” What makes them think only Pastors are God fearing? ”
Its true we are not voting for a Pastor however we are voting for a God fearing leader.
