Where are the Governing Authorities in America?

A monarchy is a political system based upon the sovereignty or rule of a single person referred to as a king. In Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary “king” is defined as: “The chief or sovereign of a nation; a man invested with supreme authority over a nation, tribe or country; a monarch. Kings are absolute.” Of course, we all know America is a constitutional republic so we don’t have a king – right?

Our Founding Fathers were very clear who had the “supreme authority over our nation.” John Jay, the First Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, wrote in 1793: “The people are the sovereign of this country.” James Madison wrote in Federalist No. 46, 1788: “The ultimate authority… resides in the people alone.”

Our founding documents also affirm who has supreme authority in our nation. The Declaration of Independence is the foundation on which the structure the U.S. Constitution was framed. It says, “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed (people).”

Have you ever wondered why the preamble of the U.S. Constitution starts off in big letters “We The People?” Our founders deliberately did that so the “People” would remember they are the ultimate authorities – not our government or any representative of government. The people are the supreme authorities and the U.S. Constitution is the “supreme law of the land.”

The Bible says, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God” Romans 13:1. According to this verse – and our founders – this means “We The People” are the governing authorities of America, appointed by God?” If “We The People” are the governing authorities then shouldn’t our elected representatives be “subject to the governing authorities?” Where are the chief sovereigns or kings of America? Why aren’t “We The People” holding our representatives accountable for their immoral, unconstitutional legislation?

Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” Romans 13:2
