Letter: Same Sex Marriage 4/23/15

Recently I wrote a letter to the Naples Daily News regarding if the U.S. Supreme Court should recognize same sex marriage in the U.S. Constitution. My letter speaks nothing about hatred toward homosexuals or same sex marriage, only the saving grace of Jesus Christ. I also included a letter in response to my letter. Mr. Goldstein’s reply shows that many churches today are being deceived by denying God’s Word as the truth along with saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Letter: Marriage

Thomas Hughes, Naples

Marriage

In our nation, citizens have always recognized marriage as a God-ordained institution between one man and one woman.

In late April, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments from those advocating that same-sex marriage should be recognized by our Constitution.

So let me understand this, those that are promoting same sex marriage are the same ones that want religion out of our culture and anything but religion in? Interesting, because God established marriage in Genesis and used Adam and Eve as that pattern for marriage, Jesus said, (God) “created them from the beginning” and “made them male and female … Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Mark 10:7-8).

God’s written word, the Bible, is clear regarding same sex marriage (homosexuality), “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22) and “…nor homosexuals…will inherit the kingdom of God” (I Corinthians 6:9).

The Declaration of Independence acknowledges God’s moral law in the phrase “the laws of nature and of nature’s God.”

Homosexuality is not part of nature (male and female) and is condemned in His written word. The Bible views same sex marriage (homosexuality) as morally wrong, but God’s grace can offer freedom from sin to all people.

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through Him” (John 3:17). Let us all pray and believe that the Supreme Court will not try to define marriage because that has already been done.

Letter: Marriage equality

David B. Goldstein, Naples

President, PFLAG Naples

Marriage equality

I was saddened but not surprised to read Thomas Hughes’ hateful letter with respect to same-sex marriage or, as I prefer to call it, marriage equality.

On Sunday, April 19, PFLAG Naples sponsored its eighth annual Interfaith Convocation at Naples United Church of Christ, which was an outpouring of religious support for LGBT rights. Participating congregations included Episcopal, Presbyterian, Unitarian and Jewish organizations, and one of the speakers was a senior Methodist minister. Unfortunately, neither Roman Catholic nor Baptist clergy participated.
